The Bay Circuit Trail

  • Location: Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway, 210-mile trail around Boston.
  • Client: National Park Service, River and Trails Program.
  • Materials: Collected items, journals, photographs, maps assembled into a traveling folding exhibit.
  • Budget: $15,000
  • Collaborators: Edythe Wright, Andy Wolfe, Bay Circuit Alliance, and Trekkers

Detail of The Cabinet of Curiosities

The Bay Circuit Trail is a 210 mile “Emerald Necklace” that surrounds Boston, crossing through 45 towns. In 2000 hikers started  a 16 day trek from Duxbury to Essex.  Participants were given tools to create visual and verbal journals of their travels. Each day the hikers collected artifacts from along the trail. Andy Wolfe, a poet and musician, accompanied the trek to create poems and songs along the route. The journals and artifacts were assembled into The Cabinet of Curiosities and exhibited in the towns along the route. The Cabinet is designed to encourage townsfolk to walk the trail and recognize the goal of acquiring the land to complete this “Emerald Necklace”.
